Chia seeds are often called a super food, which means it's a kind of food that contains significant nutrition and possible medical benefits.

Omega 3's, a type of polyunsaturated fat, have been shown to reduce inflammation with regular consumption.

Inflammation has been linked to heart disease, cancer, and arthritis-just to name a few.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, aka Dr. Oz, has said that chia seeds, "have the highest antioxidant activity of any whole food, even more than blueberries".

While more research is needed in order to prove this theory, it has been proven that chia seeds do in fact have a very high antioxidant content, this content is said to be at safe levels for human consumption.

Antioxidants are incredibly valuable to the human body because they stop free radicals from multiplying and damaging healthy cells.

Free radicals are volatile and dangerous at high quantities, they are formed when certain molecules come in contact with oxygen.

Low levels of antioxidants in the body equates to colossal cell damage, especially if a high amount of free radicals are being produced.

Antioxidants are known to stop to production of free radicals, which in turn keep more of the body's cells healthy.

Eating chia seeds has been said to help maintain a feeling of fullness, which can lead to weight loss.

Baking muffins with chia seeds is quite popular for an on-the -go, healthy snack with an added crunch.

Chia seeds are wonderfully versatile as well. The mild nutty flavor in chia seeds allows for them to be used on sweet or savory foods.

Those who enjoy cooking and/or baking, but want added nutrition and less saturated fat, can whip up jams or jellies, quick breads, baked chicken or pork chops.

When combined with water, chia seeds form a gel that can be used as an egg substitute when baking.

Furthermore, chia seed gel can be used to thicken soups, gravies, and stews, as well as a bread crumb substitute when making meatballs, meatloaf, and breading for cooking meats.

It's true that chia seeds are very good for general health and well being; however, consuming too much of anything, including chia seeds, can be dangerous.

With that being said, the health benefits of chia seeds are immense, even though chia seeds haven't been researched as heavily as other foods.

What is known, is that chia seeds contain vitamins, minerals, essential fats, and antioxidants, while at the same time, being low in calories, which is significant when dieting, losing weight, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
